I am absolutely in love with Zoe Buckman's new work for her 'Every Curve' project! She has collected a number of vintage lingerie pieces and combined them with her juxtaposing hip-hop and feminist upbringing to create hand-stitched reworking of history - literally.
Buckman was born and raised in a feminist household in Hackney, East London but she now lives and works out of NYC's East Village. Growing up she listened to a lot of hip-hop, including The Notorious B.I.G and Tupac, who's lyrics influenced her 'Every Curve' collection. As a feminist, Buckman believes that it is actually rather masculine to shove feminism in people's faces and that “It’s not about eliminating and excluding. You can be yourself and still be a feminist". Buckman wanted to look at the misogyny in hip-hop and feels that her exhibition takes "their words and recreate them as something beautiful and thought-provoking" as even she can see that Tupac was 'uplifting' and 'pro-choice' towards women in some of his lyrics.
Buckman has worked with numerous materials in the past, but felt as though lingerie suited the project well as "representations of women throughout history". Clearly working on such delicate structures and hand-stitching each letter exposed a light on how oppositional perceptions can be on the subject matter.
I highly appreciate the intricacy of Buckman's work, and feel that the 'clothesline' aesthetics and the juxtaposition work harmoniously to form a provocative, inspirational and refreshing collection.
