THE VELVET TOUCH

Crushed velvet is back ladies and gentlemen, and just in time for those brisk autumn afternoons. Summer is still trying to shine on through the misty mornings and cloudy afternoons, and with it prolongs the high-waisted leggings, midi skirts and bodycon dresses. However, now that the leaves are changing and we’re beginning to wear a coat to our already painful 9am lectures, these styles needs to adapt!

Velvet offers us a warmer, comfier and more wind-proof fabric to help us bare the changing weather without having to pile on the scarves, gloves and hats! Already many of the high streets store have begun to adopt the velvet trend and incorporate it into its present styles - floral midi skirts, leggings and shoes are now being made with velvet. One of the main high-street stores, Topshop, has also created a velvet trend section on its website, offering an array of velvet products from hair-ties to shoes, and tops to dresses, so you have plenty of products to suit your style!

As the days get colder, it seems the nights get even worse! Sometimes you don’t realize how cold it really is outside until you have to walk 15 minutes to a club in a pair of shorts – and this is where velvet can be your savior! As it’s a thicker material than standard cotton, throwing on a velvet dress or pencil skirt can keep you just that little bit warmer (as well as a shot of tequila before leaving the house).

Autumn/Winter also brings a darker, more gothic colour trend. Many of the velvet products available online and instore our favourite high street brands are black, dark green, deep red and navy blue. With Christmas quickly approaching (I know it scares me too!), our wardrobes change from bright, summer colours to mossy greens, oxblood red, black and greys, sparkles and leather.

Velvet can help carry you through the last of the sunshine to the cold winter parties, from a pair of velvet leggings with boots and a leather jacket to a navy blue velvet wrap dress, it’s the perfect Autumn/Winter material.
